About the Festival

Early Music Festival named after Piotr of Grudziądz exceeds a simple music festival. It is a multithreaded music and education project that is able to make use of the modern audience engagement forms to promote the early music. While linking to the local culture, it does not forget the wider context even outside of Europe. It brings the Piotr of Grudziądz and his work closer, thus giving us inspiration and enabling our sensitivity.

Remigiusz Józefowicz – Head of the Festival

Who was Piotr of Grudziądz?

Piotr of Grudziądz was a 15th-century Latin poet and a composer, a graduate of the Royal Academy, a chaplain of the German king and emperor Frederick III. His music was wide-known all over central Europe, where it was played by pupils and students, friars and townsmen – not only in Poland and Bohemia, but also in German-speaking countries. Some of Piotr of Grudziądz’s pieces gained great popularity which didn’t die down even to 17th century. Piotr’s work is still being discovered, his music enriches repertoires of the most essential early music performers. It continues to astonish, surprise, and intrigues by showing the unique relations between countries and nations of the central Europe.

Paweł Gancarczyk PhD – professor in the Art Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences
